I volunteered for an afternoon at Saint Bakhita Centre for Sudanese Catholics, which offer daycare for kids whilst their parents learn english and so on - I got to take care of this lovely boy called Blake. He was the nicest, cutest, and sweetest little boys and he just warmed the cockles of my heart.
I remember very clearly, I was playing with Blake when one of the older boys got out of the sandpit and came and sat with me. He would’ve been about six. We chatted for a bit, then unexpectedly he shoved his still sandy finger in my mouth, asking me what I had on my teeth. I then realised he had never seen braces before and then I sat for a good five minutes bearing my teeth to any other kid the little boy brought along to see what he had found. I had to smile at his enthusiasm.
